2007 Grand Champions - Munchin' Hogs at the Hilton

IT'S FAMILY FUN FOR ALL

The fun starts at 7:00 AM for the early risers. There is a Pancake Breakfast served  from 7 until 10 at the Wakarusa Township Fire Department. Their station house is immediately east of the Broken Arrow Park where all the BBQ activities take place.

The actual contest involves the judging of four different BBQ meats, and this begins at noon. The Sertoma 48 BBQ is a State Championship Cookoff run under the auspices of KCBS (the Kansas City Bar-B-Que Society), and our Grand Champion wins a spot at the American Royal Cookoff ... the Holy Grail of BBQ contests!  There is official judging for this part of the contest, but there is also a PEOPLE'S CHOICE award. This is voted on by the public who wish to participate. For one ticket ($5) you can sample meat prepared by these world class BBQ contestants. There are two separate contests ... one starting around 11 AM and the second at approximately 1 PM. Each contest has two different types of meat available to sample from each of more than 20 contestants. You won't leave the contest hungry!

There is also a food tent with sandwiches, side dishes, soft drinks, water and more. There will be cold draught beer for those old enough.

The Sertoma 2007 Corporate Cookoff

One of the really fun times at the Sertoma BBQ will again be the Corporate Cookoff. This was held on Friday, May 11. This is not part of the "official" contest and was open to any Lawrence area business who wished to participate. This cook-off is a lighthearted competition between local businesses to see who can grill the best hot dog, burger, brat .... or whatever they could dream up. Style, imagination and pizzazz was highly valued in costumes and booth decor. This meant a backyard cooker could compete with the "big boys"! The main idea was to come out and have fun!

We want to thank all our contestants for making last year's Corporate Cookoff the best yet! The enthusiasm and spirit shown for the event has grown through the years and we couldn't have done it without all of you.

The funds raised from the Friday and Saturday event at the 48 BBQ stay in our local community to help with Sertoma's civic goals.  One major beneficiary of the event is a Summer Camp for kids that is specially designed so that children with communication disorders can have a great time right along side those who don't have that difficulty.  The Schiefelbusch Clinic organizes it and Sertoma is a co-sponsor.
