The 2003 Heritage Week
Presentations were GREAT!
|
As part of the 2003 Heritage Week Program a copy of the Declaration of Independence was be distributed by Sertoma members to all Eighth grade students in the Lawrence Junior High schools. This program has been an important sponsorship of Sertoma Club for many years. Our goal is to illustrate the rights and privileges we enjoy and at times take for granted in a free society where freedom of speech is guaranteed under the of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Between Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays we have always tried to present a program which emphasizes these freedoms we enjoy .
The Lecompton Re-enactors presented part of "Bleeding Kansas", a historical play written by J. Howard Duncan. The scene
was in a town meeting format. Each speaker portrays the role of a person living in the Lawrence
or Lecompton area during the years preceding the Civil War. Those represented
include Territorial Governor Geary, John Brown, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Sheriff Jones, Jim Lane, Frederick
Douglass, Dr. Pelot, Senator Atchison, and Dr Robinson. Each actor's costume is
true to the clothing worn in the 1856-58 period. Just as one would expect during the crucial time
of determining whether Kansas would become a Free State or a
Slave State, each speaker makes their appeal trying to convince others of their
position. Sertomans John Solbach and John Golden are members of the
Re-enactors.
