It's about helping kids ... The camp is a collaborative effort between the Lawrence Sertoma Club and the Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at KU. This summer Communication Camp brings together children and youth with and without communication disorders to explore their world and improve their communication skills while participating in camp activities. The Camp is staffed by students and faculty from the Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. The camp is held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds and is providing education, fun, and new experiences for 90 children each year. |

What camp means ... in the words of parents and family. ... This is a wonderful program that gives our son a chance to participate in a fun camp like a "normal" kid. He loves it so much and gets to play with peers just like him. He's not the outsider for a change. ... My son has autism and rarely speaks. The camp gives him a way to meet new people and practice his skills while having a great time. It's a special treat for him and he likes it when his brothers ooh & ahh over his take home stuff. ... This is a priceless experience that my boys really look forward to ... one with and one without speech issues. For my non-verbal son this is one of the only things he can do and really enjoy. Thank you, thank you. ... This camp is the highlight of our son's summer. It is the ONE and ONLY place he is accepted as he is ... This is such a blessing. Thank you. ... Our son has thoroughly enjoyed his time at the camp, and we have seen positive outcomes with both speech and social interactions at home. This is such a valualbe resource for the campers & their families. ... Thank you for all you do for the children! |
